SEMrush Competitors and Alternatives Worth Their Weight in Gold

You probably know that a solid SEO strategy is essential for user engagement and ensuring visitors have a good experience with your site, ultimately boosting your ranking on search engines.

However, SEO can be pricey and it’s likely you don’t want your digital marketing budget spiraling out of control either.

When done properly, SEO can be a time-consuming and expensive business. From keyword research to building backlinks and competitor analysis, SEO alone can cost your marketing team valuable time and financial resources.

That being said, amazing content and putting in the hours on your site is simply not enough to stand out amongst the competition. High-quality content combined with the right data and insights will allow your marketing team to come up with a strong and detailed strategy.

Today we’re showing you how you can access powerful SEO tools. First, we’re going to take a look at what features make SEMrush so popular and why it’s also important to check out what the competitors are offering.

Why Is SEMrush So Popular and What Are Its Main Features?

SEMrush Dashboard - SEMrush Competitors Alternatives

With over 5 million worldwide users, SEMrush is one of the most popular and well-respected SEO tools on the market.

Their powerful Keyword Magic tool has more than 18.3 billion keywords and claims to be the largest keyword database on the market. The more keywords you have available for your research, the more ideas you’ll have to maximize your SEO and PPC campaigns.

The separation of terms by topic, the detailed analysis of keywords, and how easy it is to export keywords between features of the platform mean SEMrush is particularly strong on the keyword side of SEO.

SEMrush also provides backlink analysis, discovers better advertising options and analyses your competition, making it one of the most comprehensive SEO tools out there.

Price: Pro plans are $99.95/month and come with 28 different powerful SEO tools. A guru plan is $199.95/month while a business plan is $399.95/month. There are discounts for annual billing.

Cons:

  •  The data provided is for Google search engines only and doesn’t take into account other search engines. While Google does account for the vast majority of online searches - 92% according to Statcounter, it’s worth remembering that competing search engines are not considered at all on SEMrush.
  • The layout of SEMrush’s user interface can be confusing and requires prior knowledge of SEO.
  • Some users complain that the Ad spend data is inaccurate. Whether this is a temporary glitch remains unclear, and while no software is perfect, errors in this price range are cause for concern.
  • SEMrush cannot filter data by city only by country. If city-specific data is important to your business, you’ll need to use another platform.
  • Currently, you cannot save lists of keywords within the platform, meaning your only option is to export the list as an Excel file. Ideally, it would be better to have all the relevant data stored within the platform to keep all your SEO efforts streamlined.

Top 10 SEMrush Competitors and Alternatives

Before you make a decision about whether SEMrush is the right SEO tool for your business, take a look at what features the competitors are offering.

1. Ahrefs

Ahrefs Hero Image - SEMrush Competitors Alternatives

It probably won’t come as a surprise that Ahrefs is one of the top contenders when it comes to SEO tools. The closest competitor to SEMrush, it offers comparable features with a few added bonuses.

Ahrefs boasts excellent internet-wide and site-specific crawling capabilities as well as robust features like keyword management and competitive analysis. Although it’s interface can seem confusing it’s an authoritative option for professional marketers.

Price: Lite plans for 1 user start at $99/month, plans steadily increase depending on the number of users and projects with a full-blown agency plan costing $999/month.Yearly plans come with discounts.

Ahrefs vs. SEMrush

Pros Cons
Uncover all the keywords your competitors are ranking for and analyse their top-ranking web pages. Ahrefs doesn’t include keyword metrics like trend, competitive density, and SERP features which SEMrush does have.
Essential SEO data including keywords, value and traffic is presented in a clear, user-friendly dashboard. Restrictions on the most basic plan limit the platform to one user and just five projects unless you pay extra.
Perform keyword research for 9 additional search engines including Amazon and YouTube. No disavow tool. If your site receives bad backlinks, you’ll have to manually remove them by uploading them to Google Search Console's Disavow tool.
View how many backlinks your site will need to rank for a specific keyword. The web traffic stats aren’t as accurate as other platforms - Ahrefs’ web traffic stats are usually 4-5x lower than those reported in Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
Use the SEO add-on for Chrome and Firefox web browsers. This tool shows metrics such as; backlinks profile, PPC cost and search volume for all search engine results. No integration with Google Analytics, which is a negative if you like to use GA for SEO reporting.

Best for: Ahrefs is probably best for agencies who're looking to track keyword movements across multiple client accounts/projects.
